Family child care is the caring business of supporting families, quickly becoming one of the most important professions in our society's framework. If you have children, family child care enables you to earn an income while being at home with your own children. Therefore, because you are working in your own home, you become your own boss. In addition to setting your own hours, you also decide what programs to offer and establish your business policies.

A home provider wears many hats. To be a family child care provider, you must be:

• An independent worker
• Self-motivated
• Confident
• Able to maintain accurate business records
• Committed to providing positive developmental experiences for children
• A strong decision-maker with the ability to stay calm in the face of disaster
• Able to recognize daily learning opportunities and assist and allow child participation
• Interested in establishing positive self-support systems
• Able to think and see things from a child's viewpoint and enjoy life!

In Colorado, day care homes are required to be licensed to insure that the home meets minimum health and safety standards. Twelve hours of pre-licensing training are required by the State. Six clock hours of on-going training are required on an annual basis. The topic areas for on-going training are:

• Developmentally Appropriate Practices
• Guidance
• Family Relationships
• Cultural & Individual Diversity
• Professionalism
